Welcome to Liljas Scandinavian Handicraft – A Story of Tradition and Craftsmanship
Hello and a warm welcome to Liljas Scandinavian Handicraft! I’m so happy you found your way to my new online shop and blog. Here, I want to share everything happening behind the scenes, my thoughts on woodworking, and of course the stories behind every unique piece I create.
My Journey as a Wood Artisan
I’ve been working with woodcraft for over 15 years, learning more every day about this beautiful material and the tradition of creating by hand. All my products, like the hand-carved Nisse gnome and the unique dragonfly with hammered copper wings, are crafted with great care in my home studio in Bohuslän, Sweden. It’s a slow craft where every detail matters, and I only use traditional hand tools. Mastering this skill takes time, but it makes each piece a unique work of art—no two are ever exactly alike.

Behind the Scenes – A Day in My Workshop
I work alone in my small home studio in Bohuslän, where every figure—whether it’s a gnome or a dragonfly—is carefully shaped and refined with love and precision. Often, the sounds of nature inspire new shapes and expressions as I work.
What Is a Nisse?
The Nisse is a mythological figure from Nordic folklore, traditionally linked to the winter solstice and Christmas. A small, bearded creature who guards homes and farms but is known for having a short temper if mistreated. Giving a Nisse is sharing a piece of Nordic folklore and magic.
